The North Texas Patriot Guard Riders
Are Proud To Have Been A Part Of The
SNOWBALL EXPRESS
"It Was All About The Kids!"
In Dallas December 9 Thru 13, 2009
Congratulations on a Job Well Done Whomever
the person was that said "Never does a man stand so tall as when he
stoops to help a child", must have been watching the motorcycle riders
this week.
Now standing taller are the Patriot Guard Riders, the many local riders and all the support people who had the opportunity to spend some time with the Snowball Express. This organization brought to Dallas-Fort Worth, almost 1800 children who have lost a parent in the War since 9-11-2001 Trying to
find the right words to express the many thanks each of you deserves are
well beyond me. Know that each of you should hold a lot of pride within
your heart for what you accomplished this week with these children.
Christmas is a time of year for giving and sharing and each of you gave
these children a smile on their face and shared the gift of Love with
each child.
Talking
with the kids and knowing they understand more than most what sacrifice
and true sharing is all about, brought a lot of tears to the eyes
of
a lot of big bikers.
Those of
you who may not have had the opportunity to get involved with Snowball
Express this year can start planning on next years events. My hat is
off to the 87 riders who showed up on the first day for the multiple
round trips to escort the Snowball Express from DFW Airport to the many
Hotels in downtown Dallas. It took a lot of heart to leave your warm
home in the dark and brave a 16 degree wind chill. However,
I know each of you soon realized it was well worth it when you
were paid with a big smile and a wave from a
happy child. The
second day found groups of riders working their way around early morning
downtown Dallas traffic to get to the assigned hotels for the escorts to
South Fork Ranch.
This also proved to be a heart warming day for the
riders as they were welcomed inside and they found out the kids
considered the riders to be their hero's. The highlight of the day for
the children was an escort from there to the Mesquite Rodeo Arena. The
kids and most of the parents had never seen an escort where the freeway
was shut down, much less participate in it. As one child put it "I
feel like I am someone special". The rest of the afternoon and evening
was spent with the riders and the children enjoying smile, hugs, a rodeo
and a free Stetson Hat.
Day three
found those same groups of riders working their way once again through
the early morning Dallas traffic to escort the Snowball Express to City
Hall where each of the children were welcomed by the riders standing a
double flag line leading to City Hall. This flag line gave the kids a
great photo opportunity with the riders and then in the doors of City
Hall to meet with the Mayor of Dallas.
As the kids departed for the Dallas Convention Center for a day
of fun they were directed through a double flag line down the center of
the street. On day
four, you guessed it, the riders once again showed up but this time it
was to escort the Snowball Express to Cowboys Stadium to spend the day
with America's Team, the Dallas Cheerleaders and the new stadium. The
highlight of the event was a concert by the Lt. Dan Band staring Gary Sinise. The bikes completed the escort then pre positioned for a grand
entry of over two hundred motorcycle into the stadium. The ride into the
stadium was done to the background tune of "Born in the USA". Under
the direction of stadium security they entered (racking Pipes were not
quite loud enough to drown out the sound of the children yelling for the
riders). The number of bikes that will fit around the field was off to
say the least, but a little Sturgis type of double parking and the task
was accomplished by all the riders at hand. This was a great time of
sharing for both the riders and the kids. These children showed so much
respect for the riders that some of them took the footballs they had
signed by the Dallas Cowboys players and asked if the riders would sign
their foot ball. And on the
fifth day, you guessed it. Riders showed up at the downtown hotels at 4
am to escort these Snowball Express kids back to the Airport. The
escorts ran until about 1 pm, but the memories of this will last a
lifetime in the hearts of the children and the riders.
The riders saw these children leave through eyes filled with
bittersweet tears. Thank You
from the bottom of my heart,
Mike

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Below is information regarding the Snowball Express airport escorts
on December 9, 2009 from DFW airport to the hotels. Also
included is a link to take you to the sign-up sheet. You may
return to the sign-up sheet to alter your information if you need to
but you must do it from the same computer where you started the
survey and not erase your cookies. If you don’t know what
computer cookies are, don’t worry about them. Just complete
the brief survey and you’ll be all signed up. Changes,
additional details and other information will be posted on the North
Texas PGR web site at
www.txpgr.org. Just click
on the button for Snowball Express and all the latest information
will be there. Staging is at
10:00 AM in Parking Lot 5E at DFW International Airport. This
parking lot is accessed off of the northbound service road inside
the airport at crossunder number 6. It is marked as employee
parking. You do NOT go through the toll booths to get to this
parking area. We will stage with the busses in this lot.
Please be on time. We will have a briefing as soon as final
instructions are received from Snowball Express. If you are
not signing up for the first escort, your staging time is 30 minutes
prior to your first one. The current general plan is
for a group of riders, to include a Ride Captain and at least one
big flag bike, to move to the terminal (through a toll plaza) with
the busses when called up and leave the airport via the South exit
and head for a hotel location in Dallas. When you arrive at
the hotel location you will pull in with the busses and when the
busses stop to load you will leave them there and return to the
staging area at the airport to prepare for another run. While
one group is conducting an escort, other groups will be being called
up and beginning the next escort, etc. You are going to be
asked on the form for your motorcycle license plate number. We
will turn that number in ahead of time and having that number will
prevent you from being charged the toll. Please bring your own
food and water/beverage as needed. Law Enforcement is
scheduled to accompany each escort. Additional details will be
provided at the on-site briefing. |

NORTH TEXAS PATRIOT GUARD RIDER SNOWBALL EXPRESS GUIDELINES |
You Will Be Asked To Acknowledge
That You Have Read These Guidelines At The Bottom Of This Window |
12/03/2009
The Patriot Guard Riders of North Texas are called upon for many
different kinds of missions; from flag lines, to funeral
processions, to parades, to being pall bearers and everything in
between. A saying we
favor among ourselves is “
While one of the things that’s appealing about being in the Patriot
Guard is its informality we all can acknowledge that missions of all
types operate more smoothly, are safer, and ultimately serve the
honorees and family members better if we have some general
guidelines we can follow during our missions.
These procedures, or guidelines, have been learned through
trial and error, learning by doing and from watching others who do
what we do.
These guidelines are not intended to cover everything.
That’s just not possible.
Always remember that the Ride Captain has the final say.
He or she is in charge and they will make the decisions on
EVERYTHING. Not
everything can be etched in stone.
Situations may call for decisions on the fly and the Ride
Captain has the authority, the knowledge and experience to know what
to do.
A
brief suggestion about general conduct:
The Patriot Guard Riders are becoming more and more well
known and are fast becoming a household name in both civilian and
military culture in the
YOU ARE THE PERSON
IT
IS THE POLICY OF THE Any rider who takes it upon him
or herself to block traffic will be dismissed from the mission. The
only exception will be at the specific request of a Certified Law
Enforcement Officer.
This does not
include requests from members of funeral escort Companies.
EXCEPTIONS will be rare
RIDING IN FORMATION
Ø
Motorcycles will travel in
two columns, in a staggered formation.
Ø
Each motorcycle will be 2
seconds behind the motorcycle in front of them. The slower you
go the closer you ride. Your
spacing is set on the bike directly in front of you, not the bike to
your 11 or 1 o’clock position.
Ø
Do NOT ride beside someone.
Stay in the staggered formation. This will allow room to
avoid road hazards without changing into the escort’s lane.
Ø
Do not
lane-cross in the formation.
Changing from your side of a lane signals the rider behind you of a
road hazard in the pathway. If the rider in front of you must leave
the formation for any reason or moves forward to fill an open
position. Move forward to fill in the hole. Do not start the
procession with any vacant spots in the formation.
Ø
Watch the vehicle in front of you.
The moment you take your eyes
off that vehicle will be when they hit the brakes.
Ø
Use of stock emergency flashers (hazard lights) is optional.
Any other auxiliary lights should be used as authorized in
advance by the Ride Captain.
Ø
All riders will use hand signals.
Ø
All hand signals will be passed back to those behind you.
Ø
Be conscious of escort riders or police traveling at higher speeds
in traffic lanes next to the procession.
They may use horns or sirens.
Ø
Ø
If you cannot ride in the
entire procession do
NOT ride in the procession.
Ø
If you must leave the procession,
be certain that your exit
lane is clear of police officers or escort riders.
Use caution!!!
Ø
If you are late to a mission,
do not ride in the procession until you review the mission briefing
with the Ride Captain.
Ø
Prior to arriving at the staging area
make sure you have adequate
fuel.
Ø
If you leave the procession for a detour, unscheduled fuel stop or
any other reason, rejoin at the rear of the procession.
Do not try to re-enter your previous spot.
Ø
All cages will follow the motorcycles.
Ø
All cages must travel with the flashers on and are not required to use
hand signals
Ø
Follow the person in front of you.
Ø
If a vehicle tries to enter or cut into the procession, do
not block them.
Let them through and offer them room to fit in.
They will likely move on as traffic allows.
Keeping good spacing in the formation will discourage but not
prevent this, vehicles need to use freeway exits, etc.
Use of obscene, rude or otherwise unfriendly gestures or creating a
dangerous situation with a motorcycle or cage will result in the
rider being dismissed from the mission.
The Ride Captain in charge of the mission has the authority to
dismiss
If you have any questions ask the mission Ride Captain.
YOU ARE THE ONE RESPONSIBLE FOR SAFETY
Let’s all make it our policy to be safe, stay safe and watch out for
each other so that we can do what we came for, and that’s honor our
service heroes and their families.

This is where all of the participants will parade on foot to the
Dallas Convention Center. We will reestablish the flag line so
that the kids and family members can walk through the flags at the
beginning of the “Walk” and we will then fall in behind them with
the flags and go with them to the Convention Center. From
that point, the participants will go into the Convention Center
where a full day of activities and music are planned for them.
Once we roll the flags and have a final briefing we are done for the

The first escort
of the day will be to take the participants to breakfast. At
this time the location for this breakfast has not yet been
determined. Keep an eye on the North Texas PGR website at
www.txpgr.org for additional
details. The next escort will be to a central location – to be
determined by the Dallas Police Department – where the busses and
riders will be staged for a mass procession to Cowboys Stadium.
Some are calling this an actual “Snowball Express”. There will
be approximately 43 busses, support vehicles, Law Enforcement and
the Patriot Guard Riders all in one formation descending on Cowboys
Stadium from Dallas. It ought to be quite a show. If you
are a cager and have a Patriotically Decorated Vehicle – something
really nice – bring it along and we can put it in the procession.
Once there, the participants will go inside the stadium where the
Cowboys have a number of events planned for them, including current
and former Cowboys greats on hand, star athletes from other sports,
tours of the stadium, field, locker rooms, etc., cheerleaders to
take the girls on tours and onto the field, food, activities, etc.
We will stand down then following a briefing until time to line up
for a motorcycle ride into the stadium. The exact time and
exact location for that staging has not yet been determined by the
organizers. Keep an eye on the web site for that information.
We will ride into the stadium and onto the playing field as an
opening for a concert for the Lt. Dan Band, let by actor and
supporter of our military troops Gary Sinese. We will ring the
field and park the bikes. Commercial kick stand pads must be
used and they will be checked prior to entering the stadium.
No kickstand pad – no entry. We are looking for between
300-500 bikes for this ride-in. We will not be fed during the
concert but it is OK to bring your own food and non-alcoholic
beverage. Our seating will be either on the turf or on your
bike. If you bring it in, carry it out. Leave no trash
behind. After the concert (about 90 minutes as I currently
understand) we will ride out of the stadium and stage to escort the
busses back to the hotels and one group of busses to American
Airlines Center. It will be dark when we leave.
Reflective clothing is recommended. Law enforcement
is scheduled to be present at each escort and will be present in
numbers at the stadium. Please bring your own food and
water/beverage as required. Additional details will be
provided at the on-site briefings. Thank you. Steve Lucas |
